Antoine Semenyo has made a flying start at Manchester City, scoring in each of his first two appearances since his £65 million ($87 million) move from Bournemouth last week. The Ghana international opened the scoring in City’s 2-0 League Cup semifinal first-leg victory over Newcastle on Tuesday.
Semenyo also found the net in a 10-1 FA Cup win against Exeter on Saturday, although a second goal at St. James’ Park was controversially ruled out after a lengthy VAR review. Despite the disallowed goal, the 22-year-old now has 12 goals in all competitions this season and has quickly adapted to his new surroundings.
“The whole environment here is perfect,” Semenyo said. “Everyone is confident and wants to achieve the best. They have helped boost my confidence and made me feel welcome. I am enjoying every moment and taking the confidence I had at Bournemouth here with me, playing with a smile on my face.”
City extended their lead late in the match through Rayan Cherki, scoring deep into nine minutes of added time caused by the VAR check on Semenyo’s disallowed goal. Despite taking control of the game, City expressed frustration at the decision, recalling a controversial 2-1 Premier League loss to Newcastle earlier in the season when they were denied two penalties.
City captain Bernardo Silva voiced the team’s disappointment: “It should have been 3-0, but we’re quite used to this at the moment. It’s frustrating because last time we came here a lot of decisions went against us.”
With Semenyo’s confident start and immediate goalscoring impact, Manchester City fans will be hoping he continues his prolific form as the team targets silverware this season.
