Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon has received criticism from supporters and sections of the Spanish media following his performance in England's 0-0 draw with Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 25-year-old was handed a starting role by England coach Thomas Tuchel but struggled to influence the match. Gordon worked hard defensively and pressed Ghana's back line, but he found little space against a disciplined defence and was substituted after 65 minutes.
England were unable to break the deadlock despite dominating possession, leaving questions over the attacking balance ahead of their final Group L match against Panama.
Gordon joined Barcelona from Newcastle United earlier this summer in a deal reportedly worth an initial £70 million, with performance-related add-ons potentially taking the total fee to £78 million. Expectations were high after the transfer, but his latest international outing has prompted frustration among some Barcelona supporters.
Several fans took to social media to question the club's investment after Gordon failed to create clear chances or provide meaningful service to captain Harry Kane. Others described the signing as expensive and argued that the winger has yet to justify the transfer fee with his recent performances.
Spanish newspapers also offered mixed reviews of the England international. Reports described his display as ineffective, noting that he struggled to break through Ghana's organised defensive structure and lacked the attacking sharpness expected from a player of his profile.
Former England defender Gary Neville also suggested Gordon could come under pressure to keep his place in the starting lineup. Speaking after the match, Neville said the Barcelona winger was likely to face increased competition for a starting role after England failed to score.
Marcus Rashford, who replaced Gordon at Barcelona before the transfer window, is now pushing for a recall after impressing during England's opening 4-2 victory over Croatia. Bukayo Saka is also expected to challenge for a place once fully fit after making a positive impact from the bench.
Despite the criticism, England remain in a strong position at the World Cup. The Three Lions lead Group L with four points and need only a draw against Panama to secure first place and a favourable path into the knockout rounds.
Tuchel is expected to assess his attacking options before naming his team for the decisive group-stage fixture, with Gordon among several players hoping to retain their place in the starting eleven.
