Anthony Elanga Set for £55m Newcastle Switch as Spurs, Everton Strengthen Squads

Posted : 08 July 2025

Newcastle United are poised to make their first major signing of the summer transfer window, with Swedish international Anthony Elanga set to arrive from Nottingham Forest in a deal worth £55 million ($75 million). Multiple outlets, including The Athletic, BBC, and Sky Sports, reported on Tuesday that the winger is on his way to St James’ Park.

Elanga, 22, was a standout performer in Nottingham Forest’s remarkable campaign last season, contributing six goals and 11 assists as the club secured a surprising seventh-place finish in the Premier League. Forest originally signed him from Manchester United for just £15 million in 2023, making this deal a significant profit.

The Magpies, backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, are preparing for a return to the UEFA Champions League but have faced spending restrictions due to financial sustainability regulations. Elanga’s signing represents a major step forward in their bid to compete at the highest level in Europe.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur announced the signing of Japanese centre-back Kota Takai on a five-year deal from J-League side Kawasaki Frontale. Though financial terms were not officially disclosed, British media suggest the transfer fee is around £5 million ($6.82 million).

Takai, 20, is a graduate of Frontale’s youth system and was part of the team that finished runners-up in the Asian Champions League Elite tournament. He has also earned four caps with Japan’s national team. Takai becomes the third central defender to join Spurs this summer, following the arrivals of Luka Vuskovic and Kevin Danso, whose loan from RC Lens was recently made permanent.

Tottenham, who broke a 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League last season, are aiming to rebuild after finishing a disappointing 17th in the Premier League.

Everton, too, are strengthening their squad, with Villarreal striker Thierno Barry expected to arrive on Merseyside for a medical ahead of a £27 million transfer. Though the deal is still being finalized, it is progressing well and could mark the club’s most significant acquisition of the summer.

Barry, 22, netted 11 goals and registered four assists in 38 appearances last season, helping Villarreal to a fifth-place finish in La Liga and Champions League qualification. Although his release clause was set at £34.5 million, Everton are negotiating a slightly lower fee.

Born in Lyon, Barry began his career at Sochaux before moving to Belgium’s Beveren and then to Swiss side Basel. Villarreal signed him in 2024 for around £13 million. His arrival at Everton is timely, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin departing after his contract expired and Armando Broja returning to Chelsea following a loan spell.

With Elanga, Takai, and Barry on the move, the summer transfer window is heating up across the Premier League, as clubs gear up for the 2025–26 campaign.
