Nottingham Forest have turned to Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach following the dismissal of Nuno Espírito Santo, who was relieved of his duties late on Monday night after just three games of the new Premier League season.
Postecoglou, 60, returns to management three months after his departure from Tottenham. His spell at Spurs ended after a difficult league campaign that saw them finish 17th, but he delivered a historic Europa League triumph to end the club’s long wait for silverware.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis expressed confidence in the appointment, praising Postecoglou’s pedigree and trophy-winning experience.
“We are bringing a coach to the club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies,” Marinakis said. “His experience at the highest level, combined with his ambition to build something special with Forest, makes him the right man to help us achieve our goals.”
Nuno had taken charge of Forest in December 2023, succeeding Steve Cooper, and helped the club secure survival in the top flight. He followed that up with a strong campaign last season, guiding Forest to seventh place — their best league finish since 1995 — and securing European qualification for the first time in three decades.
However, his tenure had become uncertain in recent weeks after he admitted to tensions with Marinakis, while reports also suggested a strained relationship with Forest’s global sporting director Edu. A heavy 3-0 defeat to West Ham before the international break ultimately sealed his fate.
Forest currently sit 10th in the table after three matches, but Postecoglou will be tasked with pushing the club towards competing for trophies. His first game in charge comes on Saturday against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
The appointment marks Forest’s eighth permanent managerial change since Marinakis took ownership in 2017, underlining both the challenges and ambitions driving the club’s new era.
