Andy Robertson Urges Tottenham to Forget Past Struggles and Change Mindset

Posted : 23 September 2026

Andy Robertson has called on his Tottenham Hotspur teammates to put the difficulties of the previous two seasons behind them as they look to recover from a poor start to the Premier League campaign. Spurs entered the international break at the bottom of the table with just two points from their first five matches.

Tottenham invested heavily during the summer, spending around £380 million on 10 new players, but the results have yet to reflect that recruitment. The club's difficult start continued with a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa, leaving Roberto De Zerbi's side without a league victory.

Robertson, who joined Tottenham on a free transfer from Liverpool, believes the squad must avoid carrying the disappointment of previous campaigns into the current season. Spurs finished 17th in each of the last two Premier League seasons, and the Scotland captain said the players must now focus on building a different future.

The defender acknowledged that last season's relegation battle had affected the squad's confidence. He said the responsibility to change that mentality rests with both the manager and the new players, who must help Tottenham move forward rather than remain focused on previous setbacks.

Robertson also pointed to Tottenham's recent 3-1 League Cup defeat at Liverpool as an example of the team's inconsistent confidence. He observed that the players could perform strongly for periods but appeared to lose belief after conceding, before regaining their confidence when they scored.

The latest defeat to Aston Villa highlighted some of those problems. Villa moved three goals ahead through Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emiliano Buendia before Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke scored late for Tottenham. The result left Spurs winless after five league matches.

De Zerbi had previously described his Tottenham team as "fragile" following the Villa defeat, increasing the focus on how the squad responds after the international break. Robertson's message is that Tottenham need to develop greater consistency and confidence if they are to move away from the bottom of the standings.
