Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has expressed confidence in striker Alexander Isak, saying the Swedish forward has the backing of the entire team as he continues his impressive goalscoring run. Isak has scored six goals in seven Premier League appearances this season, including strikes in each of his last three league matches, as he begins to justify Liverpool’s £125 million investment in his services.

The 27-year-old endured a difficult first season at Anfield following his controversial departure from Newcastle United, with injuries disrupting his progress. However, his recent performances suggest he is finding his rhythm and becoming an increasingly important figure in Liverpool’s attack.

Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s League Cup fourth-round encounter with Chelsea, Iraola said Isak knows his teammates trust him to convert chances when they create opportunities. The manager also stressed that the striker must contribute to the team’s overall play by making intelligent movements, helping build attacks and creating space for others.

Iraola explained that Liverpool’s attacking success depends on cooperation between Isak and the players supplying him with chances. He believes the forward understands that relationship and hopes the team can maintain its current level of performance throughout the season.

Liverpool head into the Chelsea fixture seeking a fifth consecutive victory in all competitions. Iraola acknowledged the importance of the League Cup, describing every competition as an opportunity for a club of Liverpool’s stature to compete for silverware. However, he warned that Chelsea would provide a difficult test and insisted his side would need a strong performance to progress.

The Spaniard also discussed his efforts to win over Liverpool supporters after taking charge from Arne Slot. He said he understood that earning the fans’ affection would require consistent results and committed performances rather than promises. Iraola praised the supporters’ backing during Liverpool’s recent 2-0 Premier League victory over Brighton, highlighting the team’s determination, defensive work and willingness to fight for every ball.

Regarding team selection for the Chelsea match, Iraola indicated that changes were likely as he assessed the players’ fitness amid a demanding schedule. He was hopeful that Germany international Florian Wirtz could feature, while Dominik Szoboszlai and Victor Muñoz were less certain to be available.

With Isak in strong scoring form and Liverpool building momentum, the upcoming cup match offers the club another chance to strengthen its season. Iraola will hope his striker can continue delivering goals while the team maintains the collective work rate and discipline that have driven its recent improvement.
