Ampem Darkoa Ladies of Ghana have defeated Nigeria’s Edo Queens 3-2 after extra time to win the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League qualifying title. Mohammed Afishata scored the decisive goal in the 92nd minute in Cairo, securing the Ghanaian champions a place at the CAF Women’s Champions League finals.
The victory came after the continuation of the original regional final, which ended 2-2 in regulation time on September 5 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Edo Queens initially won 4-1 on penalties, but Ampem Darkoa challenged the decision to proceed directly to a shootout without playing extra time.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) upheld Ampem Darkoa’s protest and ordered the match to resume from the beginning of extra time. The decision was subsequently upheld by the CAF Appeal Board, setting up the decisive encounter in Egypt.
With the score level at 2-2 before extra time, both teams returned to the pitch knowing that 30 additional minutes would determine the WAFU-B representative at the continental tournament.
Ampem Darkoa took advantage of the opportunity when Afishata found the net in the 92nd minute. The goal proved decisive, giving the Ghanaian side a 1-0 victory in the resumed period and a 3-2 aggregate result across regulation time and extra time.
The result ended Edo Queens’ hopes of returning to the continental competition as regional champions. The Nigerian side had initially believed they had secured qualification after their penalty shootout victory in September.
For Ampem Darkoa, the win marks a return to the CAF Women’s Champions League for the second time in the club’s history. The Ghanaian champions previously competed in the continental tournament in 2023 in Côte d’Ivoire.
Their qualification also strengthens Ghana’s representation in African women’s club football. The Techiman-based side will now prepare to face some of the continent’s leading teams in the competition scheduled for Egypt from November 1 to 15, 2026.
Ampem Darkoa have been drawn in Group B alongside Moroccan champions AS FAR, Uganda’s Kawempe Muslim Ladies and USFAS Bamako of Mali. The group presents a demanding challenge, with AS FAR entering as defending champions.
The CAF Women’s Champions League will bring together eight clubs competing for the continental title. The top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals, scheduled for November 11, while the final will take place on November 15.
Ampem Darkoa will aim to build on their regional success as they return to the continental stage. Their immediate task will be to compete against experienced opposition and secure a place in the knockout rounds.
