Allen Returns to ABS Ilorin FC, Targets NPFL Promotion

Posted : 20 August 2026

ABS Ilorin Football Club have brought back experienced tactician Festus Allen as Technical Adviser, with the coach setting his sights firmly on securing promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Allen signed a one-year contract with an option for extension and was officially unveiled on Wednesday at the Taiwo Awoniyi Media Centre, George Innih Stadium, Ilorin.

His return marks a significant reunion with the club, where he previously played an important role in one of the most memorable periods of ABS Ilorin FC's history.

Speaking after his unveiling, Allen described his appointment as an emotional homecoming, recalling the contribution ABS Ilorin FC made to his growth and recognition as a coach.

While identifying promotion to the NPFL as the ultimate objective, Allen stressed that achieving the target would require collective commitment from the club's management, players, supporters and other stakeholders.

“The ultimate is the Premier League. But it cannot be done by one person. It is a collective effort. From the fans, the management, everyone’s hands have to be on deck for the objective.”

Allen previously served as part of Patrick Awaja's technical crew that guided ABS Ilorin FC to the summit of the Nigeria National League (NNL) and secured the club's historic first promotion to the Nigerian top flight.

He subsequently took charge of the team following Awaja's departure, giving him a deep understanding of the club's structure, philosophy and ambitions.

Director of Football, Alloy Chukwuemeka, described Allen as an experienced and familiar figure whose knowledge of the club made his appointment a positive development.

Chukwuemeka said ABS Ilorin FC would continue to combine the pursuit of competitive success with its long-standing commitment to youth development.

According to him, more than 253 players have passed through the club's structure and gone on to represent clubs in Nigeria and abroad.

He urged football stakeholders, supporters and partners across Kwara State to rally behind the club as it begins its campaign to return to the NPFL.

The club also commended its Proprietor, His Excellency Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, for his sustained commitment to ABS Ilorin FC and his contribution to the development of young footballers in the state.

Saraki's continued backing, the club said, has helped keep ABS Ilorin FC active and competitive while providing a platform for emerging talents to pursue professional careers.

Preparations for the 2026/2027 season will begin with players expected to resume on August 28, while full training is scheduled to commence on August 31.

With Allen back at the helm, ABS Ilorin FC will be hoping that his familiarity with the club can help drive a successful campaign and bring the team closer to its stated ambition of returning to the NPFL.
