Alhassan Yusuf Earns MLS Team of the Week Honours After Match-Winning Goal

Super Eagles midfielder Alhassan Yusuf has secured a spot in the Major League Soccer Team of the Week. The 25-year-old earned the recognition following an outstanding performance for the New England Revolution. His contributions were vital in securing a narrow 1-0 win against D.C. United at Gillette Stadium.

The Nigerian international scored the only goal of the match in the 38th minute of the first half. He showed great composure to find the net after receiving a precise setup from teammates Will Sands and Dor Turgeman. This strike marked Yusuf’s second goal of the current 2026 MLS campaign.

This season has seen Yusuf transition into a more advanced midfield role under head coach Marko Mitrovic. The tactical shift has allowed the former Royal Antwerp star to influence the game closer to the opposition's goal. He has already matched a significant portion of his attacking output from the previous year.

Yusuf has now made six league appearances this season while maintaining an impressive 88 percent pass completion rate. His ability to arrive late in the box is becoming a primary weapon for the Revolution’s offense. The club currently sits eighth in the Eastern Conference standings with nine points.

The New England Revolution have enjoyed a perfect record at home so far this year. Their victory over D.C. United was their third consecutive win at Gillette Stadium. Defensively, the team has also improved, securing a second straight clean sheet during this latest outing.

The midfielder’s focus now shifts to the US Open Cup as his side prepares for a midweek fixture. New England is scheduled to face Rhode Island in a cup tie this Wednesday. Yusuf will be eager to add to his tally of two goals and two assists from the previous season.

His inclusion in the weekly best XI highlights the growing impact of Nigerian players in the North American league. Pundits believe his consistent form could earn him more opportunities with the Nigerian national team. The midfielder continues to prove himself as a reliable asset in a competitive league environment.
