Algeria appears poised to start goalkeeper Luca Zidane in the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after the squad announcement on Saturday confirmed that Alexis Guendouz would miss the tournament due to a knee injury sustained in the Algerian league earlier this week.
Zidane, 27, the second son of French World Cup winner Zinedine Zidane, plays for Spanish second-division side Granada and made his debut for Algeria in a World Cup qualifier last October after switching allegiance from France, where he represented the national youth teams. With his grandparents hailing from the Kabylie region, Zidane is now expected to be ahead of Oussama Benbot and former first-choice Anthony Mandrea in Algeria’s goalkeeping hierarchy.
Mandrea, who earned a surprise recall, had previously been overlooked due to playing in the third tier of French football with Caen, following their relegation from Ligue 2. Algeria will compete in Group E in Morocco, facing Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, and Sudan.
The squad also includes notable players such as striker Baghdad Bounedjah, who scored the winning goal in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations final against Senegal. However, Olympique de Marseille attacker Amine Gouiri is absent due to shoulder surgery, expected to keep him sidelined until February. Gouiri had also missed the last Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast due to injury.
Algeria’s final 28-man squad features a blend of experience and youth across all positions, with goalkeepers Luca Zidane, Oussama Benbot, and Anthony Mandrea; defenders including Youcef Atal, Ramy Bensebaini, and Aissa Mandi; midfielders such as Houssem Aouar, Ismael Bennacer, and Ibrahim Maza; and forwards including Riyad Mahrez, Baghdad Bounedjah, and Mohamed Amoura.
