Algeria’s Lady Fennecs achieved a major milestone on Sunday by holding Nigeria’s Super Falcons to a goalless draw in their final Group B fixture at the 13th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The result, which took place in Casablanca, secured Algeria a spot in the quarterfinals for the first time in the tournament’s history.
Nigeria’s head coach, Justine Madugu, made eight changes to the team that narrowly defeated Botswana 1-0 last Thursday. New starters included defenders Shukurat Oladipo, Miracle Usani, and Sikiratu Isah; midfielders Christy Ucheibe and Jennifer Echegini; and forwards Francisca Ordega, Ifeoma Onumonu, and Chinwendu Ihezuo. They were joined by regulars Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal, Tosin Demehin in defense, and team captain Rasheedat Ajibade.
The tactical reshuffle was clearly intended to rest key players ahead of Friday’s high-stakes quarterfinal clash with Zambia’s Copper Queens.
In a tightly contested match, Algeria adopted a defensive approach, similar to Botswana's strategy in the previous match, placing numbers behind the ball to frustrate the Super Falcons' attacking flow.
Despite the compact Algerian defense, Francisca Ordega stood out with her energetic performance. Just before halftime, she delivered a dangerous cross that fell to Ifeoma Onumonu, but her effort was blocked before it could challenge Algeria’s outstanding goalkeeper Chloe N’gazi Boumrar.
The second half saw increased pressure from Nigeria. In the 52nd minute, chaos in the Algerian box nearly resulted in a goal, and three minutes later, Ordega unselfishly passed to Ajibade, who was immediately double-teamed and dispossessed.
Late attempts from Echegini, Ordega, and substitute Esther Okoronkwo failed to break the deadlock, allowing the Algerians to hold on for a vital point.
The result not only denied Nigeria a perfect group-stage record but also marked a historic moment for Algerian women's football, as the Lady Fennecs advanced to the WAFCON quarterfinals for the first time ever.
