AFCON 2025 Round of 16: Algeria Eye Unbeaten Record Against DR Congo

Posted : 05 January 2026

Algeria will aim to maintain their unbeaten streak against the Democratic Republic of the Congo when the two nations meet in the AFCON 2025 Round of 16 at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday.

The Fennecs topped Group E with a perfect record, claiming three wins and nine points—a feat last achieved when they lifted the trophy in 2019. Algeria defeated Sudan 3-0, edged Burkina Faso 1-0, and secured a 3-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea, marking their return to the knockout stage after missing out in the last two editions.

DR Congo finished second in Group D, just behind Senegal on goal difference, with two wins and a draw. The Leopards opened their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Benin, followed by a 1-1 draw with Senegal, and concluded with a 3-0 win against Botswana. The team has now qualified for the knockout stage for a fifth consecutive tournament, aiming to surpass their 2023 semifinal exit at the hands of hosts Ivory Coast.

Historically, Algeria have remained unbeaten in seven meetings against DR Congo, winning three and drawing four times. At AFCON, the teams have met twice, including a 1-0 win for Algeria in 1998 and a goalless draw in 2000.

Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković expressed confidence after their final group stage win, noting the team has had five days to prepare and will be ready for the knockout challenge. Key players to watch include Riyad Mahrez, who has scored three goals in two games and hopes to secure a second continental title, while Cédric Bakambu will be the main threat for DR Congo, having scored once in two matches so far.
