Alexander Isak Shines as Sweden Crush Tunisia in World Cup Opening Win

Posted : 15 June 2026

Alexander Isak made an immediate impact on his World Cup debut, scoring a trademark goal as Sweden produced a commanding victory over Tunisia in Monterrey. The Liverpool forward, who has faced injury setbacks since his high-profile move to Anfield, delivered a powerful finish from the edge of the area after a surging run from the left, helping his side take control of the match.

Sweden opened the scoring early through Yasin Ayari, who struck a brilliant effort into the top corner after just seven minutes. The Brighton midfielder capitalised on defensive hesitation to give his side a perfect start, marking his first international goal in style on football’s biggest stage.

Isak’s goal came midway through the first half after a well-worked move involving Viktor Gyökeres. The Arsenal striker held up play before releasing Isak into space, allowing the forward to drive forward and finish clinically into the bottom corner to double Sweden’s lead.

Tunisia briefly fought their way back into the contest just before half-time when Omar Rekik rose highest to head home from a Hannibal Mejbri free-kick, reducing the deficit and giving his side hope heading into the break.

However, Sweden quickly reasserted their dominance in the second half. Isak turned provider after the restart, setting up Gyökeres for a composed finish as the Premier League duo combined again to restore a two-goal cushion.

The Scandinavian side continued to press forward and extended their lead in remarkable fashion when substitute Mattias Svanberg scored just 12 seconds after coming onto the pitch, setting a new World Cup record for the fastest goal by a substitute.

Ayari capped off an outstanding performance with his second long-range strike of the match, sealing a 5–1 victory and completing a memorable night for Sweden. The result sends Graham Potter’s side to the top of Group F and sends a strong message to their rivals in the tournament.
