Alexander Isak Reveals Fitness Struggles After Liverpool Double at Ipswich

Posted : 05 September 2026

Alexander Isak says overcoming his fitness problems at Liverpool was difficult after his two goals secured a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road. The Sweden international struck twice inside the opening nine minutes as Liverpool recorded their first Premier League win of the 2026/27 season.

The 26-year-old admitted that the previous campaign had been challenging because of a serious injury that disrupted his first season at Anfield. Isak said he had been focused on recovering fully and starting the new campaign strongly after returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Isak suffered an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture while scoring against Tottenham Hotspur in December 2025. He underwent surgery and was out for 101 days before returning to team training in April.

His recovery limited his involvement during Liverpool's previous campaign, but the striker has started the new season in impressive form. He had already scored against Nottingham Forest and now has three Premier League goals from three appearances.

Against Ipswich, Isak needed only six minutes to open the scoring. He then doubled Liverpool's advantage three minutes later, with Cody Gakpo providing the assist for both goals. The quickfire double gave new head coach Andoni Iraola his first victory since taking charge.

Isak praised Gakpo for his contribution and highlighted Liverpool's improved attacking approach. The forward said the team wanted to move the ball forward quickly after winning possession and felt the plan was executed effectively against the newly promoted side.

Gakpo has also made a strong start under Iraola. His two assists against Ipswich took his Premier League goal involvement to four this season, with one goal and three assists. The Dutch forward has become an important creative outlet in Liverpool's new attacking setup.

Liverpool controlled the game after their explosive opening and protected their advantage without conceding. Alisson Becker made an important save from Julio Enciso, while the Reds' defence remained firm as Ipswich searched for a way back into the contest.

The victory lifted Liverpool to fifth place with five points from three matches. Iraola's side had previously drawn 2-2 with Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, making the win an important early boost for a squad undergoing significant changes.

Liverpool now turn their attention to the Champions League. Iraola's side will host Atlético Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, September 9, in their opening league-phase fixture.
