Alexander Isak Joins Liverpool in Record-Breaking Transfer Deal

Posted : 02 September 2025

Liverpool have completed the signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a record-breaking transfer that eclipses the previous British record. The Swedish striker agreed to a six-year contract with the Premier League champions and will take the iconic number nine shirt at Anfield.

“I want to create history here. I want to win trophies,” Isak said after the move was confirmed. “This is the perfect place for me to grow further, take my game to the next level, and help the team.”

The transfer fee surpasses the £107 million Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023. Liverpool initially had a £110 million bid rejected earlier in the summer, but Isak’s determination to push through the transfer eventually paved the way. The forward even spent time training alone at his former club Real Sociedad rather than linking up with Newcastle for pre-season.

Isak becomes Liverpool’s eighth first-team signing of the window, following the club’s earlier record deal for Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds’ summer spending has now exceeded £400 million, with big names such as Luis Diaz, Darwin Núñez, and Trent Alexander-Arnold departing. Despite their transfer success, Liverpool missed out on England defender Marc Guehi after Crystal Palace refused to sanction his sale.

Newcastle, meanwhile, signed German forward Nick Woltemade in a club-record deal worth up to £69 million, effectively clearing the way for Isak’s exit. The Swede had been a standout performer last season, scoring 27 goals in all competitions and playing a key role in ending Newcastle’s 56-year trophy drought with a League Cup triumph over Liverpool.

Other Transfer Headlines

Elsewhere, Newcastle reinvested part of the Isak fee to secure Brentford striker Yoane Wissa for £50 million. In Manchester, City are close to finalizing a €35 million deal for Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, with Ederson set to join Fenerbahce. Donnarumma is expected to become Pep Guardiola’s first-choice keeper, relegating James Trafford to a backup role.

Manchester United addressed their own goalkeeping woes by signing Belgian shot-stopper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18 million. The club also saw significant departures, with Antony sold to Real Betis, Jadon Sancho loaned to Aston Villa, and Rasmus Højlund moving to Napoli.

Meanwhile, Chelsea loaned striker Nicolas Jackson to Bayern Munich in a deal that includes a purchase obligation of €65 million. The Blues also secured Brighton winger Facundo Buonanotte on loan. Tottenham agreed a temporary move for PSG’s French striker Randal Kolo Muani, while Arsenal brought in Ecuador defender Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen on loan, sending Jakub Kiwior to Porto in return.
