Liverpool manager Arne Slot has indicated that striker Alexander Isak could feature in Wednesday’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. The 25-year-old joined the Premier League champions from Newcastle in a British-record £125 million transfer on deadline day but did not play in Sunday’s 1-0 win at Burnley due to lacking full match fitness. Having trained alone to expedite his move, Isak still requires additional work to reach peak readiness.
“Definitely a chance because he’s in the squad,” Slot told reporters, while noting the striker would not play the full 90 minutes. Asked if Isak might start, the Dutch manager said his presence in the squad meant there was a possibility, though he emphasized that fitness remains the main challenge.
Isak’s form at Newcastle played a key role in ending the club’s 56-year trophy drought and securing Champions League qualification last season. However, this season his only appearance was an 18-minute substitute cameo for Sweden in a 2-0 defeat against Kosovo on September 8. Slot stressed that Isak does not need to prove his ability in the Premier League, as his performance at Newcastle had already demonstrated his quality.
The arrival of Isak has shifted some focus away from Liverpool playmaker Florian Wirtz, who has struggled to find his rhythm since his £100 million move from Bayer Leverkusen. Slot defended the 22-year-old, highlighting the team’s strong start to the season and the quality of opposition they have faced.
Liverpool’s pre-season was overshadowed by the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota in July, a loss that affected the squad deeply. Despite a summer rebuild costing nearly £450 million, the club sits top of the Premier League with four wins from four games. Slot praised the squad’s performance, describing it as “far above” his expectations and commending the quality of the new signings.
