Alex Iwobi's comments on Nigeria's AFCON quarter-final against Angola

Posted : 01 February 2024

Super Eagles and Fulham midfielder, Alex Iwobi, is keenly aware of the looming threat posed by Angola as Nigeria continues its quest for success in the AFCON 2023 tournament held in Ivory Coast. At 27 years old, Iwobi has been a consistent presence in Nigeria's lineup, starting in three matches and contributing off the bench during the team's 1-0 victory over Guinea-Bissau in the final group game.

Having played a significant role in Nigeria's triumph over Cameroon in the round of sixteen, Iwobi acknowledges that the upcoming match against Angola will present an even more formidable challenge. In his pre-match conference, Iwobi shared insights into the team's preparations, stating, "We’re trying to see where to explore to see where their weakness is. As the coach said, it’s a game where both teams want to go to a semi-final, and it will be tough."

Despite his reputation for attacking flair, Iwobi has been deployed in a deeper midfield role by coach Jose Peseiro, where he has embraced the responsibility of managing and retaining possession for the team. He discussed the coach's instructions, stating, "I’ve been told to manage and keep the ball for my team. They don’t really need much from me when they’re creating up-front."

Highlighting the team's defensive solidity, Iwobi recognizes the collective effort in both scoring and defending. He acknowledges the attacking potential within the team, including players like Chukwueze, Moses, Lookman, and Victor, allowing him and Frank to focus on controlling the game and contributing to the team's defensive efforts.

Expressing confidence in the team's creativity and strategy, Iwobi remains focused on fulfilling his role for the Super Eagles. The impending quarter-final clash against Angola poses a significant challenge, and Iwobi is committed to doing his part to secure victory for the team. The match is scheduled to take place at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, promising an intense and competitive encounter between the Super Eagles and the Palences Negras of Angola.
