Alex Iwobi Reflects On Pride For Nigeria Ahead Of Historic 100th International Appearance

Posted : 09 June 2026

Fulham playmaker Alex Iwobi is on the verge of joining the most exclusive tier of Nigerian football history. The creative midfielder is expected to earn his 100th senior international cap on Wednesday evening. The Super Eagles will face Portugal in a high-profile international friendly match hosted at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria.

By featuring in this fixture, the 30-year-old will become the fastest player to reach a century of appearances for the West African nation. He will eclipse the long-standing record held by former team captain Ahmed Musa. Musa completed his milestone 11 years and 35 days after his initial debut. Iwobi is on track to seal his century in just 10 years and 245 days since his first outing against the Democratic Republic of Congo in October 2015.

The former Arsenal and Everton player represented England at various youth levels before pledging his long-term career to his ancestral home. Reflecting on this turning point, Iwobi stated that he has never questioned his allegiance. He noted that the national team setup felt like home from the moment he entered the under-23 training camp.

The midfielder admitted he carries great pride when wearing the green-and-white jersey. He expressed sincere appreciation to the technical staff and fans who have supported his decade-long international journey. While acknowledging the disappointment of missing out on the imminent 2026 FIFA World Cup, he remains content with his personal career path.

His father, Barrister Chuka Iwobi, also expressed the immense pride felt by the entire family. The senior Iwobi commended his son's patriotism and consistency through the various highs and lows of international football.

Alex Iwobi singled out his decisive goal against Zambia in October 2017 as his absolute favorite moment with the national team. That historic strike in Uyo officially sealed Nigeria's ticket to the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia. He remains determined to add many more appearances to his tally in the coming years.
