Alex Iwobi Applauds New Super Eagles Faces and Issues Apology After Recent Red Card

Posted : 06 April 2026

Super Eagles playmaker Alex Iwobi has shared his thoughts on Nigeria's recent international outings in Turkey. The Fulham midfielder expressed significant praise for newcomers Emmanuel Fernandez and Chibuike Nwaiwu. Both players earned their first senior caps during the 2-1 victory over Iran in Antalya.

Fernandez replaced Semi Ajayi at the halftime interval to bolster the defense. Nwaiwu entered the pitch in the 57th minute after receiving a late invitation to the squad. Iwobi noted that both center-backs performed solidly against a tough opponent that controlled long spells of possession.

The victory against Iran provided a necessary lift for the Nigerian side. Goals from Moses Simon and Akor Adams secured the win despite a late strike from Mehdi Taremi. Iwobi acknowledged the difficulty of the fixture and credited the team for maintaining their lead.

However, the international break ended on a sour note for the experienced midfielder during the subsequent clash with Jordan. Nigeria played out a 2-2 draw, but Iwobi was sent off late in the game. The dismissal followed a physical confrontation with Jordan's Amer Jamous.

Iwobi used a recent podcast appearance to publicly apologize to his teammates and coaching staff. He admitted that his actions were not up to the required standard for a national team player. The midfielder emphasized his desire to learn from the mistake and move forward professionally.

Despite the red card, Nigeria remained unbeaten across their two friendly fixtures. Iwobi highlighted this as a positive takeaway for the squad as they prepare for future competitive matches. The team showed resilience to hold onto the draw against Jordan even while playing with a numerical disadvantage.

Iwobi has now reached a total of 99 appearances for the Super Eagles. He is currently just one match away from joining the prestigious century club of Nigerian internationals. His leadership remains a focal point for the team despite the recent disciplinary lapse.
