Akwuegbu Expands Youth Football Project With Acquisition of NLO Division Two Slot

Posted : 25 June 2026

Former Nigerian international, Benedict Akwuegbu, has taken another significant step in youth football development with the acquisition of a slot in the Nationwide League One (NLO) Division Two for his U-19 side, creating additional opportunities for young footballers in Plateau State and beyond.

The development was confirmed in an official letter signed by the Chief Operating Officer of NLO Division Two, Dr. Olushola Ogunnowo, authorising Ben Akwuegbu U-19 FC to take over the slot previously occupied by Great Achievers FC of Enugu ahead of the new season scheduled to commence next month.

The acquisition marks a major milestone in Akwuegbu's efforts to provide a structured platform for emerging talents to showcase their abilities and pursue professional football careers.

Reacting to the approval, Akwuegbu expressed gratitude to the NLO Division Two leadership, particularly Dr. Ogunnowo, whom he praised for his role in transforming the country's third-tier league structure.

"I want to specially thank the COO of NLO Division Two, Dr. Olushola Ogunnowo, who is an embodiment of transformation in the nation's third-tier club football league. I welcome this opportunity and will use it to contribute my quota towards giving young players more opportunities to realise their football dreams," he said.

In a related development, the Plateau State Football Association formally acknowledged and endorsed Ben Akwuegbu U-19 FC as an affiliate club. The endorsement was conveyed through an official communication signed by the Chairman of the Plateau State Football Association, Dr. Prince Suleiman Yahaya Kwande.

The association commended Akwuegbu for his continued commitment to grassroots football development and his contributions to the growth of the game in Plateau State.

Responding to the recognition, Akwuegbu thanked the state FA leadership, describing Dr. Kwande as a driving force behind the recent progress recorded in football development across the state.

With the latest addition, Ben Akwuegbu FC will continue its campaign in NLO Division One, while Ben Akwuegbu U-19 FC will make its debut in NLO Division Two when the new season kicks off next month, further strengthening the club's football development structure.

The expansion of the Ben Akwuegbu football project underscores the former striker's commitment to nurturing young talent and creating pathways for future professionals. The dual presence of his clubs in NLO Division One and Division Two is expected to provide greater opportunities for player development and competitive exposure.
