League leaders Akwa United FC tightened their hold on the Nigeria National League (NNL) Conference B summit with a 2–0 victory over First Bank FC at Uyo Township Stadium on Sunday, completing a season double against the Lagos-based side.
The win preserved Akwa United’s unbeaten home record and extended their lead at the top of the table to four points as the promotion race intensifies.
Although Akwa United dominated possession in the first half, First Bank’s disciplined defence kept the game goalless at halftime. The breakthrough finally came in the 63rd minute when Paulinus Okon rose above the defenders to head in Yannick Menegbe’s cross, sending the home crowd into celebration.
Okon doubled the lead in the 75th minute, calmly finishing to secure his brace. From that point, the hosts controlled the game, maintaining possession and managing the tempo to claim maximum points and their eighth win of the season.
Head coach Paul Offor praised the team’s performance and the supporters’ unwavering support:
“We love them. We put in our best to perform well for them, that’s why we are here. We encourage them to always come out to push us so we can achieve this target together.”
He later expressed gratitude on social media:
“To our valued fans, your presence elevates ordinary moments into unforgettable experiences. We appreciate your unwavering support and look forward to sharing the finale with you. Akwa United Football Club, Uyo.”
With confidence high, Akwa United now focus on Matchday 13 against Osun United. Sunday’s display confirms that the Promise Keepers are not just leading the table; they are setting the pace in Conference B.
