2025/2026 NNL Match Day 1: Ruthless Akpabio United Announces Promotion Intentions with Five-Star Performance

Posted : 16 November 2025

Godswill Akpabio United FC kicked off their new Nigeria National League (NNL) campaign with a performance that left no doubts about their ambitions, dismantling First Bank of Lagos 5–1 in front of an energized home crowd at the Uyo Township Stadium.

From the onset, Akpabio United showed the hunger of a team determined to set the tone for the season.

Their early dominance was rewarded when Eco Barine, returning to familiar territory after his spell with Akwa United, powered home a towering header to put his side in front.

Despite controlling the tempo, the Uyo outfit could not extend their lead before the interval, allowing the visitors a lifeline.

That lifeline was short-lived as First Bank stunned the stadium with a composed equalizer shortly after the restart. But if the visitors thought they were back in the contest, Akpabio United had other ideas. The goal triggered an immediate and ruthless response.

Samuel Bassey calmly fired home to restore the advantage before Barine completed his brace with a thunderous effort that rattled the net.

From there, the floodgates opened. Substitute Isaac George made his mark with a clinical finish for the fourth, while Energy Kennedy rounded off the scoring in the closing stages to complete the demolition job.

The emphatic win instantly propelled the Uyo side to the summit of Group B with a +4 goal difference—an ideal beginning to their second NNL season under newly appointed head coach Lawrence Kingsley.

Kingsley, stepping up from his former assistant role, has spoken boldly about promotion targets, and Match Day 1 delivered early evidence that his squad is fully aligned with that mission.

With a blend of retained core players and smart reinforcements, Godswill Akpabio United now shift focus to their next challenge against Stormers FC, carrying momentum and confidence after what can only be described as a statement opening-day victory.
