Nigerian midfielder Akinkunmi Amoo has taken a crucial step in his journey back to top-level football, scoring his first professional goal in more than three years for Shanghai Jiading Huilong in China’s League One.
The 23-year-old, once regarded as one of Nigeria’s most promising young talents, endured a difficult period marred by legal troubles, injury setbacks, and a long absence from competitive football. His goal in a recent league fixture marks a turning point and offers renewed hope for the former Golden Eaglets star.
Amoo, who previously played for Hammarby IF, FC Copenhagen, and Omonia Nicosia, had gone over 36 months without finding the back of the net in an official match. Since joining Shanghai Jiading Huilong earlier this year, he has gradually worked his way into form and fitness.
Although the match result may not have favored his team, Amoo’s goal stood out as a symbol of resilience and determination. His coaches and teammates applauded the milestone, with club sources describing it as "a well-deserved reward for his dedication and perseverance."
Now contracted with the Chinese side until May 2026, Amoo is focused on rebuilding his career one game at a time. With his confidence restored, the goal could be the beginning of a resurgence for a player who once lit up youth tournaments and attracted interest from major European clubs.
