Akeem Busari Expresses Pride in Leading Nigeria’s Flamingos for World Cup Qualifiers

Posted : 17 April 2026

Akeem Busari has formally reflected on his new role as the Head Coach of Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos. He described the opportunity to lead the former World Cup bronze-medallists as a significant national honor. The Nigeria Football Federation recently appointed the former Pacesetter Queens manager to guide the youth side.

The Flamingos are currently preparing for the second round of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers. They will face the winner of the preliminary matchup between Niger Republic and Guinea. Guinea currently holds a strong advantage after securing a 5-2 away victory in the first leg played in Niamey.

Busari expressed his readiness to work alongside his coaching staff to maintain Nigeria’s high standards in women's youth football. He emphasized that serving the country is a privilege they do not take lightly. The coaching crew is focused on evaluating the squad and organizing friendly matches to ensure the players reach peak match fitness.

To begin this new chapter, the head coach has invited 36 players to the national camp for intensive training. The invited group consists of five goalkeepers, ten defenders, thirteen midfielders, and eight forwards. This diverse selection aims to provide a balanced squad capable of navigating the rigorous qualification process ahead.

The technical team is currently analyzing potential opponents to develop a winning strategy for the second-round fixture. Busari noted that the immediate goal is to integrate the new invitees into the team’s tactical philosophy. Improving the girls' physical condition remains a top priority before the competitive matches begin next month.

The first leg of the second-round tie is scheduled for the weekend of May 22 to 24. Nigeria will then host the return leg on Saturday, May 30, to decide who progresses in the tournament. The Flamingos are aiming to replicate their past successes on the global stage starting with a dominant qualifying run.
