Ajayi benched as Spurs shock Man United for Europa

Posted : 22 May 2025

Damola Ajayi, a promising young talent eligible to represent Nigeria, remained on the bench as Tottenham Hotspur clinched their first European title in over four decades. The team secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Manchester United at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao on Wednesday evening.

The winning goal came from Tottenham’s leading scorer Brennan Johnson, who skillfully flicked the ball into the net in the 42nd minute, proving to be the decisive moment of the match.

Ajayi, developed through Tottenham’s academy system, has been enjoying a strong season split between the senior squad and the youth teams. His consistent performances have drawn attention across the club.

In the Premier League 2 youth competition, the forward has been influential, contributing three goals and an assist over eighteen appearances, showcasing his potential as a rising star.

His impressive form, combined with injuries to senior players, led to his elevation to the first team, where he continued to impress with his skill and determination.

Ajayi made his senior debut in January during the Europa League group stage against Elfsborg, coming on as a substitute for Richarlison late in the match. Remarkably, he scored his first goal for Tottenham just minutes after entering the field.

Looking ahead, Ajayi aims to build on his promising start and secure more playing time with the senior squad. Meanwhile, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou continues his remarkable record of winning trophies in his second season at every club he has managed, with this latest triumph adding to his achievements.
