The Super Eagles camp in London is gaining momentum as preparations intensify for the 2025 Unity Cup. A total of ten home-based players have already arrived in the United Kingdom to participate in this invitational tournament. This early arrival is part of a strategy to ensure the team gels well ahead of the competition.
The Unity Cup will feature Nigeria competing against Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago. All matches will be held at the Gtech Community Stadium located in Brentford, setting the stage for a thrilling contest among these nations.
Among the home-based players who have arrived early are Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, Junior Nduka, Sodiq Ismaila, Waliu Ojetoye, Papa Mustapha, Collins Ugwueze, Saviour Isaac, Sikiru Alimi, and Abubakar Adamu. Veteran forward Ahmed Musa, currently playing for Kano Pillars in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has also joined the squad.
Head coach Eric Chelle has mixed local league players with foreign-based stars to create a balanced squad. The early arrival of these domestic talents is expected to help build better chemistry and readiness before Nigeria’s opening match at the tournament.
The Nigerian team will face off against their well-known rivals, Ghana, on Wednesday, 28 May. This match carries deep historical significance and is a source of immense pride for both countries, adding extra intensity to the encounter.
The Unity Cup serves not only as a competitive tournament but also as a means to foster football development and cultural ties between African and Caribbean nations. Scheduled from 27 to 31 May, it provides a valuable platform for local NPFL players to showcase their skills alongside Europe-based teammates.
By selecting ten players from the domestic league, coach Chelle is emphasizing the rising standard of the NPFL and the need to nurture homegrown talent. The squad also includes established internationals like Moses Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Samuel Chukwueze, with more players expected to join the camp soon.
