Afrinvest, NPFL Push Digital Transformation to Boost Clubs' Revenue

Posted : 31 July 2026

Afrinvest has reaffirmed its partnership with the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) with a renewed commitment to drive digital transformation and improve the commercial growth of clubs across the league.

The investment firm restated its support during the NPFL-Afrinvest Media and Marketing Workshop held in Enugu. The programme brought together media officers and marketing managers from all 20 NPFL clubs for training on branding, digital marketing, sponsorship acquisition, fan engagement and content development.

Speaking at the workshop, NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi said Nigerian clubs must improve their digital presence to remain attractive to sponsors. He noted that reliable data has become one of the most valuable assets in modern football, especially after broadcasting rights.

Owumi explained that many corporate organisations now demand credible digital statistics before committing to sponsorship agreements. According to him, the league has missed commercial opportunities because clubs have not consistently generated quality digital content and audience data.

He urged every NPFL club to contribute match reports, statistics, fan engagement figures and digital content to strengthen the league's central database. He added that a stronger online presence across all clubs would make the NPFL more attractive to investors and commercial partners.

Owumi also challenged clubs to become financially sustainable instead of relying heavily on government support. He described strong media and marketing departments as essential to building financially healthy football clubs and encouraged participants to implement the lessons learned during the workshop.

Afrinvest's Enugu Office Manager, Emmanuel Eleojo, said the company's partnership with Rangers International and the NPFL is built around its "Finance Meets Football" philosophy. He stressed that the long-term success of Nigerian football depends not only on performances on the pitch but also on sound financial management and sustainable commercial structures behind the clubs.

Rangers International General Manager Amobi Ezeaku praised both Afrinvest and the NPFL for investing in initiatives that can improve the financial future of league clubs. He said stronger marketing and media operations would help clubs increase revenue, expand their fan base and build stronger identities across the country.

Marketing expert George Isitua-Onukwu, one of the workshop's lead resource persons, urged clubs to adopt structured branding and sponsorship strategies. He explained that many potential sponsors remain cautious because clubs cannot consistently guarantee the level of visibility, activation and reporting expected by commercial brands.

He recommended that every NPFL club develop a 12-month commercial calendar covering sponsorship renewals, marketing campaigns, activation plans and performance reporting. According to him, clubs with organised commercial structures are better positioned to attract long-term investment and build brands that supporters are proud to identify with.

The workshop forms part of the NPFL's wider efforts to modernise Nigerian club football, improve commercial operations and create a more sustainable league capable of competing with leading football competitions across Africa.
