Afrinvest Chief Ike Chioke Urges Greater NPFL Transparency to Attract Corporate Sponsors

Posted : 27 May 2026

The Group Managing Director of Afrinvest West Africa Limited, Ike Chioke, has called for significant administrative reforms in domestic football. He stated that the Nigeria Premier Football League possesses the essential elements to compete globally. However, he emphasized that the league must prioritize transparency and strict discipline to attract major blue-chip corporate sponsors.

Chioke made these remarks at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Onikan, Lagos. He watched from the stands as Enugu Rangers defeated Ikorodu City 2-1 on Sunday evening. The hard-fought victory secured the 2025/2026 NPFL title for the Flying Antelopes. Captain Chidiebere Nwobodo scored once in each half to ensure Rangers claimed their record-equalling ninth domestic league championship.

Despite celebrating the historic title triumph, the financial chief expressed dissatisfaction with the matchday officiating standards. He noted that the refereeing during the tense fixture lacked proper balance. Chioke insisted that the league management must elevate officiating to meet international football benchmarks. He explained that corporate entities require absolute governance and institutional capacity before committing substantial funds to teams.

The Afrinvest boss highlighted the massive economic potential locked within the domestic sports industry. He noted that over 70 percent of the Nigerian population is currently under the age of 25. Consequently, football can serve as a vital mechanism to reduce youth unemployment and alleviate poverty. Professional leagues create vast employment opportunities in sports merchandising, club management, media broadcasting, and tactical training.

Chioke urged multi-trillion naira conglomerates, prominent commercial banks, and cement manufacturing giants to sponsor the 20 clubs in the top flight next season. He revealed that Afrinvest is relatively small compared to these major corporate institutions. Furthermore, he expressed deep pride in the sponsorship partnership between his firm and Enugu Rangers. The financial collaboration has successfully yielded two league championship trophies within the last three seasons.

The corporate leader also celebrated the individual development of the Enugu Rangers players. Two squad members are currently with the national team in London preparing for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament. Chioke stated that this international recognition highlights the superior quality of the current Rangers setup. He concluded by expressing readiness to partner with the NPFL board to elevate the commercial value of Nigerian football.
