Africa’s Road to the 2026 World Cup: Drama, History, and Opportunity Await

Posted : 06 December 2025

Africa’s journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to be dramatic and historic, with Morocco leading the continent as the top-ranked African side and Qatar 2022 semifinalists. The Atlas Lions headline Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti, promising a clash of flair and pedigree that is sure to attract global attention.

South Africa returns to the World Cup after a 16-year absence, drawn into Group A with co-hosts Mexico, South Korea, and the winner of European Play-off A. Bafana Bafana faces a challenging path as they aim for their first-ever knockout stage appearance.

Other African teams have drawn a mix of tough and balanced groups. Ivory Coast joins Group E with Germany, Curaçao, and Ecuador, while Tunisia is in Group F with the Netherlands, Japan, and a European play-off winner. Egypt, back for the first time since 2018, lands in Group G with Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand, offering a promising chance to advance.

Newcomers and heavyweights alike face challenges. Cape Verde begins its maiden World Cup campaign in Group H against Spain, Uruguay, and Saudi Arabia, while Algeria opens a tough Group J with Argentina, Austria, and Jordan. Senegal, Africa’s second-ranked team, meets France in Group I, along with Norway and a South American–Asian play-off winner. Ghana is drawn into Group L with England, Croatia, and Panama.

Africa’s contingent could expand further if DR Congo overcomes Jamaica and Iraq to join Group K with Portugal, Colombia, and Uzbekistan. With historic matchups, first-time journeys, and high-stakes battles, Africa’s 2026 World Cup adventure promises excitement and opportunity as preparations accelerate toward the tournament.
