AFCON 2025 Review: Tanzania, Uganda Share Spoils After Dramatic Stalemate

Posted : 28 December 2025

Allan Okello’s stoppage-time penalty miss proved decisive as an intense East African derby between Uganda and Tanzania ended 1–1 at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Morocco 2025. The Group C encounter was played on Saturday night at Stade El Barid in Rabat.

Uganda were presented with a golden chance to claim all three points after substitute Karl Ikpeazu had earlier restored parity, cancelling out Simon Msuva’s opening goal for Tanzania. However, with the final kick of the game, Okello sent his spot-kick over the crossbar, denying the Cranes a dramatic late winner.

The result dealt a blow to Uganda’s hopes of easing their path to the knockout stage. Instead, the draw leaves both teams facing must-win situations on the final matchday of Group C.

The match lived up to expectations as a fiercely contested regional derby. Uganda came close in the first half when Rodgers Mato’s powerful header from an Azizi Kayondo cross crashed against the crossbar. Okello also tested Tanzanian goalkeeper Foba Zuberi twice from close range, but the breakthrough proved elusive.

At the other end, experienced goalkeeper Dennis Onyango, recalled to the starting line-up after missing the opening match, delivered a calm and assured performance, dealing effectively with Tanzania’s aerial threat.

The high tempo continued after the interval, and it was Tanzania who struck first in the 58th minute. Alhassan Baba was penalised for handball inside the area while attempting to block Alphonce Msanga’s effort, allowing Simon Msuva to convert from the spot.

Uganda responded with renewed urgency and were rewarded 10 minutes later when Ikpeazu met a Dennis Omedi cross with a diving header to level the score. Late drama followed when Uganda were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time, but Okello failed to keep his effort down.

There was still time for one last scare as Onyango spilled a late cross, but substitute Charles M’Mbowa volleyed wide, sparing Uganda further punishment.

Tanzania will next face Tunisia at the Olympic Stadium on Tuesday, while Uganda travel to Fez for a decisive clash against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
