A strike from Paul Onuachu and a brace by midfielder Raphael Onyedika propelled a restructured Nigeria team to a 3-1 victory over Uganda in their final Group C match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The win ensured the Super Eagles finished the group stage with a perfect nine points, showcasing both their depth and dominance.
Onuachu, starting ahead of Akor Adams as Coach Eric Chelle rotated his squad, opened the scoring in the 28th minute with a precise finish following a pass from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, just two minutes after Uganda’s veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango had denied a point-blank effort.
Prior to that, Nigeria had controlled large portions of the first half, with Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon creating several scoring opportunities.
The second half saw Uganda push forward, but a red card for substitute goalkeeper Salim Omar in the 57th minute, after handling outside the box as Victor Osimhen advanced, left the Cranes at a numerical disadvantage.
Raphael Onyedika then struck twice, first in the 62nd minute and again four minutes later, both times linking effectively with Chukwueze to seal Nigeria’s commanding lead. Uganda managed a late consolation goal through Rogers Mato, but it was not enough to alter the outcome.
With Group C concluded, Nigeria is set to face the third-placed team from Group F in the Round of 16 on Monday, 5th January in Fès. Potential opponents include Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, or Mozambique.
Meanwhile, Tanzania’s resilient 1-1 draw with Tunisia secured the Taifa Stars’ first-ever progression to the AFCON knockout stage, where they will meet hosts Morocco.
