2025 AFCON: Super Eagles Edge Carthage Eagles to Seal Round of 16 Spot

Posted : 29 December 2025

Nigeria displayed resilience and attacking quality to defeat Tunisia 3–2 in Fès on Saturday, securing early qualification for the Round of 16 at the ongoing 35th Africa Cup of Nations finals.

The Super Eagles produced a commanding performance for much of the contest, racing into a 3–0 lead after 70 minutes through goals from Victor Osimhen, captain Wilfred Ndidi, and Ademola Lookman. However, a tense finale followed when the Carthage Eagles pulled two goals back late on, briefly threatening a dramatic comeback.

The three-time champions made their intentions clear from the opening whistle blown by Malian referee Boubou Traore. Nigeria dominated the early exchanges, with Osimhen, Lookman, and Akor Adams consistently troubling the Tunisian defence in the opening quarter-hour.

Osimhen came close to opening the scoring in the 17th minute when he stabbed the ball home after the goalkeeper parried Adams’ shot, but the effort was ruled out for offside. The Napoli forward, however, eventually got his reward just before halftime, rising highest to head home Lookman’s deep cross in the 44th minute for his first goal of the tournament.

Nigeria doubled their advantage five minutes into the second half. Lookman delivered a dangerous corner, which Ndidi powered into the net to score his first senior international goal on his 73rd appearance for the Super Eagles.

The Eagles continued to press relentlessly, and it came as no surprise when Lookman added the third goal. After assisting the opening two strikes, the Atalanta winger capped a superb display by finishing clinically off the post following an excellent team move involving Alex Iwobi and Osimhen. Iwobi, earning his 93rd cap, was outstanding throughout, dictating play with his vision and distribution.

Tunisia responded late in the match. Montassar Talbi headed in from a free-kick on the right before Ali Abdi converted a penalty in the 87th minute after a VAR review confirmed a foul in Nigeria’s penalty area.

Despite the late pressure, Nigeria showed composure to see out the game, secure all three points, and move top of the group with six points ahead of their final group clash against Uganda’s Cranes on Tuesday.
