AFCON 2025 Round of 16: Ivory Coast Face Burkina Faso in West African Clash

Posted : 05 January 2026

Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso will clash in the AFCON 2025 Round of 16 at the Marrakesh Stadium in Morocco on Tuesday, with kickoff scheduled for 9:00 p.m. CAT. The match promises an intense West African rivalry, as both teams seek to advance to the quarter-finals.

The Elephants finished the group stage in style, defeating Gabon 3-2 on December 31 to extend their unbeaten streak to four games, including three wins. Their victory secured first place in Group F with seven points, keeping their pursuit of a fourth AFCON title on track after previous triumphs in 1992, 2015, and 2023.

Burkina Faso also ended their group campaign with a win, overcoming Sudan 2-0 on the final matchday. The Stallions advanced to the Round of 16 as runners-up in Group E with six points and are aiming to capture their first AFCON title, having previously finished as runners-up in 2013. The winner of this fixture will face either Egypt or Benin in the quarter-finals on January 10 at the Adrar Stadium in Agadir.

Ivory Coast will be without Sebastien Haller, who withdrew from the squad last month due to injury, but the team has no suspension concerns. Burkina Faso is monitoring first-choice goalkeeper Herve Koffi after he picked up a knock against Sudan, though the Stallions are otherwise fully fit and without suspensions.

Elephants head coach Emerse Fae expressed confidence ahead of the knockout clash, saying the team will rest and recover before Tuesday’s match, aiming to replicate past successes for the nation. Burkina Faso’s coach Brama Traore emphasized his squad’s determination to make a mark in the knockout stages, highlighting the importance of representing their country and targeting strong results.

Historically, Ivory Coast have dominated this West African rivalry, winning nine of the 20 meetings since their first encounter in November 1984, while Burkina Faso have won three, and eight games ended in draws. The most recent match between the two sides saw Burkina Faso claim a 2-0 victory in the 2024 CHAN qualifier held in Bamako, Mali.
