The Super Eagles of Nigeria nearly squandered a three-goal lead before holding on to defeat the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia 3-2 in their second Group C match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
Nigeria had dominated the first half, establishing a comfortable lead thanks to a glancing header from Victor Osimhen, a powerful header from captain Wilfred Ndidi, and a composed finish by Ademola Lookman, the dethroned African Footballer of the Year. The win secured an unassailable six-point lead in the group and early qualification for the knockout stage.
The first half saw Nigeria create several chances, with Osimhen forcing openings and stretching the Tunisian defense. The Galatasaray striker thought he had opened the scoring in the 17th minute, but the effort was ruled out for offside. He finally broke the deadlock just before halftime, rising highest to head home Lookman’s deep cross for his first goal of the tournament.
Within five minutes of the second half, Nigeria struck again. Lookman delivered a teasing corner that Ndidi powered home with a firm header, doubling the advantage. Lookman then completed his influential performance by adding the third goal, finishing clinically off the post as Nigeria looked set to run away with the game.
However, with under 20 minutes remaining, Tunisia gained a lifeline. Montassar Talbi scored from a free-kick routine, shifting the momentum. The tension peaked in the 87th minute when Ali Abdi converted a controversial penalty to reduce the deficit to 3-2. Tunisia pressed hard, exposing defensive fragilities in Nigeria’s side.
Despite the late pressure, the Super Eagles held their nerve, surviving a nervy finish to secure three crucial points and confirm their status as early pace-setters in the tournament.
