AFCON 2025 Best XI: Nigeria, Senegal, Morocco Dominate CAF’s Elite Selection

Posted : 22 January 2026

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has released its official AFCON 2025 Best XI, capping a memorable tournament in Morocco that showcased Africa’s finest talents, tactical evolution, and high-octane football.

Nigeria emerged as one of the most strongly represented nations in the selection, highlighting the Super Eagles’ impressive campaign, which ended with a bronze medal finish. Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Calvin Bassey earned deserved spots after delivering consistently influential performances throughout the competition.

Between the sticks, Morocco’s Yassine Bounou was the undisputed choice. His five clean sheets proved decisive, particularly in the knockout stages, as the Atlas Lions relied on defensive solidity to reach the final on home soil.

Despite missing the opening two games, Achraf Hakimi stamped his authority on the tournament upon his return, providing leadership and attacking thrust from right-back. He anchors a defence that also features Nigeria’s Calvin Bassey, whose strength, composure, and timing made him one of AFCON 2025’s standout defenders. Moussa Niakhaté and Noussair Mazraoui complete a backline that blends physical presence with technical quality.

The midfield selection reflects balance and productivity. Pape Gueye earned his place after a remarkable tournament for Senegal, highlighted by three goals, including his extra-time winner in the final against Morocco. He is partnered by the experienced Idrissa Gana Gueye, whose work rate and intelligence helped knit play together.

Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman was deployed in an advanced midfield role after a sensational run that yielded three goals and four assists, making him one of the competition’s most creative outlets.

Up front, CAF’s Best XI highlights the tournament’s most decisive attackers. Brahim Díaz finished as the top scorer with five goals, while Victor Osimhen’s four goals and two assists powered Nigeria’s push to the podium. Senegal captain Sadio Mané, named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, completed the trio with two goals and three assists in another commanding AFCON showing.

Widely hailed as one of the most competitive editions in recent history, AFCON 2025 delivered drama, quality, and fine margins from start to finish. CAF’s Best XI stands as a fitting summary of a tournament defined by elite performances, tactical discipline, and moments of individual brilliance across the continent.
