Gambia didn't win a match in five years before I came - Coach Tom Saintfiet spits fire

Posted : 30 January 2024

Tom Saintfiet, the sacked coach of the Gambia national team, has lambasted the media over unsavoury remarks targeted at him following the exit of the Scorpions of Gambia from the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d'Ivoire. Tom Saintfiet accused the media of setting him up against the world.

”You are trying to embarrass me in front of the international media.

''You, the Gambian Journalist, are trying to influence the mindset of the fans, the players, and other people.

"When we win, you are happy, but when we lose, I am the worst coach in the history of the Gambia."

''When I defend, we win matches, and you celebrate, but when I attack and we concede a lot of goals, I am the worst coach.

'When we defend and win against Tunisia, Morocco, and other teams, you people are happy.

" Let me tell you this before I come to the Gambia. "The Gambia didn’t win a match for 5 years.

"Don't forget, the Gambian League is not a professional league. Some players are paid less than $50 a month.

We never qualified for the AFCON before I came, and now we are here.

"You people think that we can beat everyone; you think we cannot be beaten,” he queried.

Recall that the Scorpions of Gambia, needing a win to realistically keep any hopes of progression out of the group stages, were defeated by Cameroon. Cameroon scored two late goals to knock Gambia out of the tournament and progress into the last 16 after a 3-2 win.
