AFCON 2023: Pelancras Negras of Angola thrashes Namibia in historic AFCON win

Posted : 28 January 2024

The Pelancras Negras (Great Antelopes) of Angola ripped the Brave Warriors of Namibia 3-0 at Stade Bouake on Saturday in a show of strength.

The Pelancras Negras thereby become the first team to advance among the seven contenders for the quarterfinals of the African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Qatar’s Al-Wakrabi’s Jacinto Dala, known as Gelson, who impressed in their group games by scoring a brace (two goals in a match) against Mauritania, repeated the feat to put Namibia on ice. Gelson scored the first goal of the match in the 38th minute through a connection from Fredy, and in the 42nd minute, he received another pass from the same Fredy to score the second goal.

Angola has never scored more than six goals in a tournament, but in the 66th minute, Gelson, before being substituted along with Fredy, found Mabululu, who plies his trade in Egypt, for Angola’s third goal and their ninth in the tournament.

Gelson is now one goal shy of Equatorial Guinea's highest scorer, Emilio Nsue, who has 5 goals to his name, and he has also overtaken Baghdad Burnedjah of Algeria and Mostafa Mohammed of Egypt, who have 3 goals each.

Two red cards were shown in the first half. The first was to Primerio De Augusto FC goalkeeper and Angolan first-choice keeper, Adikou Cipriano da Cruz, known as Neblu, who used his hands to parry a ball within the penalty arc in the 17th minute.

The Pelancras Negras of Angola quickly substituted midfielder Estrela for Swiss-based goalkeeper Anthonio Dominique. In the 40th minute, Namibia’s Lubeni Haukongo, who was already on a yellow card, tripped Angola's goal-bound assist specialist, Fredy, from behind and felt he had let his team down with his act.

Angola now awaits the winner of the Nigeria versus Cameroon match in the quarterfinals on Friday, 2nd February, at the Houphet Boiny stadium at 6 p.m.
