AFCON 2023: African countries get tough fixtures ahead of Round of 16

Posted : 26 January 2024

The ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire has entered the round of 16 stage, with mouthwatering clashes set to begin on Saturday.

After the boys have been separated from the men, 16 teams have advanced to the knockout stage out of the 24 teams that started the race. However, the next fixtures are not any easier.

Underdogs Equatorial Guinea and Cape Verde have been scintillating, shocking their more fancied powerhouses in African football to top their respective groups.

Four-time champions Ghana and 2019 champions Algeria were all bundled out by less fancied opponents in a tournament that is shaping up to be for the underdogs.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, who finished as Group A runners-up behind giant-killing Equatorial Guinea, will face arch-rivals Cameroon on Saturday in the knockout round.

Below are the round of 16 fixtures and venues:

Saturday: Super Eagles of Nigeria vs Indomitable Lions of Cameroon (Abidjan)

Pelancras Negras of Angola vs Brave Warriors of Namibia (Bouake)

Sunday: Pharaohs of Egypt vs The Leopards of DR Congo (San Pedro)

National Thunders of Equatorial Guinea vs Syli Nationals of Guinea (Abidjan)

Monday: Blue Sharks of Cape Verde vs Almoralvidis of Mauritania (Abidjan)

Teranga Lions of Senegal vs The Elephants of Ivory Coast (Yamoussoukro)

Tuesday: Eagles of Mali vs Stallions of Burkina Faso (Korhogo)

Atlas Lions of Morocco vs Bafana Bafana of South Africa (San Pedro).
