Ademola Lookman Fires Atletico Madrid to Narrow Victory Against Relegation Threatened Girona

Posted : 18 May 2026

Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman continued his exceptional form in Spain by scoring the decisive goal in Atletico Madrid's 1-0 victory over Girona on Sunday. The crucial match took place at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium. This fixture marked an emotional evening for the home supporters as club legend Antoine Griezmann played his final home game before moving to Major League Soccer.

The decisive moment of the encounter arrived in the 21st minute. Griezmann delivered a perfectly weighted low cross directly across the six-yard box. Lookman anticipated the pass brilliantly, calmly slotting the ball home from close range to break the deadlock.

The 28-year-old winger remained a constant threat to the opposition defense throughout the first half. He thought he had doubled the lead in the 33rd minute with a powerful strike. However, the referee quickly disallowed the goal for an offside infringement.

Lookman went close again early in the second half after navigating past tight spaces. A brilliant last-ditch tackle from a tracking Girona defender ultimately denied his goal-bound effort. Manager Diego Simeone eventually substituted the energetic forward in the 63rd minute, bringing on defender Clement Lenglet to preserve the slim advantage.

The Super Eagles star has enjoyed a highly successful period since his January transfer from Italian side Atalanta. He has now racked up four La Liga goals in 11 appearances for Los Colchoneros. His vital contribution on Sunday marks the first time he has scored in consecutive league matches since arriving in Spain, following his midweek goal against Osasuna.

This victory moves Atletico Madrid level on 69 points with third-placed Villarreal. The two sides will face each other in a highly anticipated final-day showdown next weekend to decide who finishes third. Meanwhile, the painful defeat leaves a brave Girona side stranded in 18th place, two points adrift of safety with just one match remaining in the campaign.
