The head coach of Lagos-based Sporting Lagos FC, Shola Adegun, has lamented his team’s failure to secure a spot in the highly coveted 2024/2025 Nigeria National League (NNL) Super 8 playoffs, despite a spirited performance.
Recall that the Noisy Lagosians delivered an intense display at the Awka City Stadium in their final bid to reach the Super 8 — a critical pathway back to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), just one season after their relegation. Needing a win to stay in contention, the team left disappointed after a dramatic 3–3 draw with Solution FC, ultimately missing out on the promotion route.
Sporting Lagos completed their 20-game regular season, finishing third in the NNL Conference B standings behind Kun Khalifa and Osun United. Other contenders still have a game in hand, leaving Sporting’s fate sealed.
Reflecting on the outcome, Coach Adegun said:
“It’s a painful one—we were really close. To lose it right at the end is heartbreaking and difficult to comprehend, honestly. Especially when you score a goal in injury time and still don’t win… it’s a tough way to end the season for us.”
He continued, “From this particular match, it’s hard to pick out any real positives. We needed three miracles. Results from Saturday’s other matches actually went in our favour. All we needed was a win against Solution FC. We came very, very close, and it leaves a heavy feeling of regret. This wasn’t mid-season—it was the end. And that’s what makes it hurt more.”
Adegun concluded by emphasizing the need for internal reflection:
“Honestly, we need to reflect deeply—to identify where we made mistakes and how we can improve next season. Right now, the emotions are still raw, so I can’t say exactly what our next steps will be. That’s something we’ll assess when we’re in a better mental space.”
