Adegbuyi, Nkwocha Released From Super Falcons for U-17 World Cup

Posted : 06 October 2026

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Favour Nkwocha have been released from the Super Falcons squad to rejoin Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos. Interim Super Falcons coach Augustine Eguavoen made the decision as the young team prepares for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Both players were initially included in Eguavoen’s 28-player squad for Nigeria’s 2028 Olympic qualifying campaign against Comoros. They have now returned to the age-grade team to strengthen the Flamingos ahead of their global assignment.

Adegbuyi arrives with strong momentum after being named Most Valuable Player at the recently concluded WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup in Yamoussoukro. She also played a key role in Nigeria’s qualification campaign for the U-17 World Cup.

The forward scored Nigeria’s second goal in the Flamingos’ 3-2 victory over Benin Republic in the first leg of their decisive qualification tie. She reacted quickest to a rebound in the 62nd minute after Kindness Ifeanyi’s effort was saved.

Nkwocha also featured prominently for Nigeria at youth level. She represented the Falconets at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland before being included in the senior squad for the Olympic qualifying assignment.

The Flamingos are scheduled to leave Nigeria on Wednesday for Morocco, where the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup finals will be held. Their return strengthens the squad as Nigeria prepares to compete against the world's leading youth teams.

Their release also comes as the Super Falcons begin preparations for their own Olympic qualifying campaign. Eguavoen had only 14 players available for Monday’s training session at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, with several other players expected to join the camp.

Nigeria will face Comoros in a two-legged second-round tie for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The first leg is scheduled for October 9, while the return match will take place on October 13, with both games being played at the Remo Stars Stadium because Comoros does not have a CAF-approved venue.

For the Flamingos, Adegbuyi and Nkwocha provide additional experience ahead of the World Cup. Their return also reflects the importance of maintaining a pathway between Nigeria’s youth and senior women’s national teams.
