Lagos is preparing to host a major football reunion as some of Africa's most celebrated former internationals prepare to face Nigerian football legends in the Legends Football Game on Sunday, November 8, 2026.
The exhibition match will take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, bringing together former African stars and members of Nigeria's celebrated 1994 and 1996 football generations.
Leading the African Legends squad are former African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Adebayor, Senegalese forward El-Hadji Diouf, former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah and Ivorian midfielder Didier Zokora.
The team will also feature several other distinguished names who enjoyed successful careers in European and international football. They include Ghanaian internationals John Paintsil and Anthony Baffoe, Senegal's Khalilou Fadiga and Burkina Faso's Aristide Bancé.
Cameroon will be represented by former captain Rigobert Song and midfielder Alexandre Song. Zimbabwean football legends Peter Ndlovu and Benjani Mwaruwari, alongside former South African goalkeeper Brian Baloyi, are also expected to participate.
Their opponents will be former Super Eagles stars drawn from Nigeria's historic 1994 and 1996 generations. The encounter will celebrate three decades since Nigeria won the 1996 Olympic football gold medal in Atlanta.
The reunion will also recognise the achievements of the generation that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and represented Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States.
The event is being organised by Toptier Sports Management in partnership with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and its Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Toptier Sports Management, Chichi Nwoko, said the initiative was designed to recognise the contributions of former African footballers and celebrate their lasting influence on the game.
"These are names that every football fan in Africa knows. We are proud to bring them to Lagos to honour the heroes of 1994 and 1996," Nwoko said.
The National Sports Commission has also endorsed the initiative, with Director-General Bukola Olopade describing it as an opportunity to celebrate former players whose achievements helped shape Nigeria's international sporting reputation.
The organisers have scheduled the opening of stadium gates for 1:30 p.m., with the main match expected to kick off at 5 p.m.
Fans unable to attend the encounter will be able to watch the live broadcast on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), African Independent Television (AIT) and Silverbird Television between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The fixture forms part of CANEX WKND 2026, Afreximbank's platform for promoting Africa's creative and cultural industries. It also provides an opportunity to connect football, entertainment and the continent's sporting heritage.
Beyond the nostalgia, the gathering is expected to highlight the contributions of former African internationals and the importance of creating sustainable opportunities for athletes beyond their playing careers.
