AC Milan have announced a major leadership overhaul after failing to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League, confirming the dismissal of head coach Massimiliano Allegri along with several senior executives.
The decision follows a 2-1 home defeat to Cagliari on the final day of the Serie A season, a result that ultimately cost Milan a place in Europe’s top competition. The defeat saw the club finish just one point outside the top four, behind surprise qualifiers Como.
Allegri, who returned to Milan last year for a second spell in charge, was unable to deliver the expected turnaround after the club also missed Champions League qualification in the previous season. His appointment had been seen as a move to restore stability and competitiveness, but inconsistent performances throughout the campaign proved costly.
In addition to the coaching change, the club’s ownership group, RedBird Capital, confirmed the departure of CEO Giorgio Furlani, sporting director Igli Tare, and technical director Geoffrey Moncada as part of a wider restructuring of football operations.
In a statement, the owners said the season had fallen short of expectations, despite Milan spending much of the campaign in strong league positions. They noted that a late collapse in form turned what had once been a promising title challenge into a “failure” by the end of the season.
Former striker and club advisor Zlatan Ibrahimović will, however, remain in his role despite criticism from sections of the fanbase.
Milan’s late-season slump included several defeats and a loss of consistency after spending long periods inside the top two of Serie A. The club eventually finished the campaign with a disappointing run that cost them European football’s elite stage.
The club now prepares for a season in the UEFA Europa League and the upcoming Serie A campaign scheduled for late August. Reports in Italy suggest potential candidates for the managerial role include Antonio Conte and Raffaele Palladino as Milan begin a new rebuilding phase under their ownership structure.
