AC Milan Nears Signing of Nigerian Winger Samuel Chukwueze
Posted : 05 July 2023
AC Milan is on the brink of adding to their illustrious Nigerian contingent as negotiations are in motion to secure the services of Villarreal's talented winger, Samuel Chukwueze.
The Italian giants have reportedly reached an agreement on personal terms with the promising Nigerian player, setting their sights on finalizing the deal with his current club.
Reflecting on the history of Nigerians who have donned the iconic red and black jersey of AC Milan, it becomes apparent that their experiences varied significantly in terms of success and impact within the club's rich tapestry.
Aliyu Datti became the first Nigerian player to make his way to Milan, making the switch from Padova in January 1999.
However, his time at the club was relatively short-lived, as a portion of his three-year tenure was spent on loan at Calcio Monza.
Datti, unfortunately, featured in only three matches for Milan without finding the back of the net before departing for AC Siena in 2002.
Taribo West followed a distinct path, initially joining Inter Milan in 1997 before making a captivating switch to AC Milan in December 1999.
West became one of the select few players to have graced the field for both Milan clubs.
Regrettably, his time at AC Milan was fleeting, with just four appearances and a solitary goal to his name before departing for FC K'lautern in November 2001.
Kingsley Umunegbu, a product of Milan's youth system, made his official debut in December 2007.
However, his appearances for the senior team were limited, leading to loan spells at Salernitana, Portogruaro, Varese, and Renate.
Unfortunately, Umunegbu never had the opportunity to feature in a league game for Milan, though he did briefly return to fill the second non-EU spot during the 2011-12 season.
Nnamdi Oduamadi's association with AC Milan began in 2008, although his official signing was delayed until January 2009 due to administrative reasons.
Despite spending two seasons in the club's youth system and being part of the victorious under-20 side that clinched the Coppa Italia Primavera in 2010, Oduamadi had limited opportunities with the first team.
He managed just a solitary appearance during his time at Milan, coming off the bench in a league encounter against Catania in September 2010.
Oduamadi eventually departed Milan in 2018 after several loan spells at various clubs.
In 2011, Taiye Taiwo made the switch to Milan from Marseille but encountered difficulties during his time in Italy.
Struggling to make a significant impact, he was loaned to QPR in January 2012, only to return to Milan a few months later.
Subsequently, another loan move beckoned, this time to Dynamo Kyiv in July.
Taiwo's underwhelming tenure in Italy concluded when he joined Bursaspor in 2013, having featured in just four Serie A games overall.
As negotiations progress for Samuel Chukwueze's potential arrival at AC Milan, fans of the club will undoubtedly harbor hopes that his tenure will bring greater success and forge lasting memories within the storied history of the red and black.
