AC Milan clinches Europa League last-16 berth despite thrilling loss to Rennes

Posted : 23 February 2024

AC Milan secured their place in the Europa League last-16 draw despite losing an exhilarating match to Rennes. Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Rennes showed signs of a comeback as Benjamin Bourigeaud scored early. AC Milan leveled with Luka Jovic's header, but Bourigeaud's penalty restored Rennes' lead.

The visitors equalized through Rafael Leao, and Bourigeaud completed his hat-trick with another penalty. Despite the thrilling encounter, AC Milan won the knockout round play-off tie 5-3 on aggregate.

Former Chelsea player Ruben Loftus-Cheek, a key performer in the first leg, came on as a substitute in the second half for AC Milan. They are set to be unseeded in the upcoming draw, potentially facing seeded British teams like Liverpool, West Ham, Brighton, or Rangers.

Meanwhile, Roma advanced on penalties against Feyenoord after the tie ended 2-2 after 120 minutes. Keeper Mile Svilar's heroics in the shootout, saving two spot kicks, secured Roma's 4-2 victory.

Qarabag progressed despite a 3-2 loss to Sporting Braga, winning 6-5 on aggregate. Azerbaijan's Qarabag secured the crucial goal in the 122nd minute, with 19-year-old Nariman Akhundzade finding the net. Freiburg overcame a 2-0 deficit against Lens to advance 3-2 after extra time, with Michael Gregoritsch scoring the winning goal.

Marseille, led by former Arsenal and Chelsea forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, eliminated Shakhtar Donetsk with a 3-1 victory, securing a 5-3 aggregate win. Sporting Lisbon, Sparta Prague, and Benfica also advanced to the last-16 draw on Friday.
