Abia Warriors FC produced one of the standout results of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, stunning Kano Pillars FC 1–0 at the iconic Sani Abacha Stadium, Kofar Mata, on Matchday 21.
Against a vociferous home crowd and in a traditionally intimidating venue, the Umuahia-based side demonstrated that reputation counts for little when met with belief, organisation, and courage. Their performance was defined by discipline, resilience, and tactical intelligence under coach Imama Amapakabo.
Few expected Abia Warriors to succeed against the Sai Masu Gida on their home turf, yet the visitors executed their game plan perfectly, absorbing pressure and frustrating their hosts for long stretches of the encounter. Kano Pillars dominated possession but struggled to break down a compact Abia Warriors defence that remained composed throughout.
The decisive moment arrived late in the game. Substitute Chinedu Nnebere, introduced in the 75th minute, made an instant impact by scoring the winning goal in the 77th minute, silencing the Kano faithful and handing Abia Warriors all three points.
The victory was timely for Abia Warriors, who were eager to bounce back after a disappointing 1–1 home draw against Plateau United in Matchday 20. It further highlights their impressive away form and growing reputation as one of the league’s most difficult sides to predict and contain.
For Kano Pillars, the defeat deepens their woes, leaving the four-time champions 19th on the league table, increasing pressure on their efforts to escape the relegation zone.
Ultimately, it was a night to remember for Umu Chineke, whose fearless display not only earned maximum points on the road but also dealt a significant blow to Kano Pillars’ ambitions in the 2025/2026 NPFL season.
