Abia Warriors rue missed chances as Kun Khalifat hold firm in NPFL opener

Abia Warriors began their 2026/2027 Nigeria Premier Football League campaign on a frustrating note after they were forced to settle for a goalless draw by Kun Khalifat Football Club of Owerri at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba.

The Matchday One encounter, which was initially scheduled for Sunday, was completed on Monday after a heavy downpour rendered the pitch unplayable and forced the game to be suspended.

For Abia Warriors, the result represented a missed opportunity to make a winning start in front of their home supporters, as their inability to convert their chances ultimately proved costly.

The Warriors struggled to find their rhythm in the opening stages, failing to create any clear-cut opportunity as Kun Khalifat remained organised and disciplined at the back.

Coach Imama Amapakabo handed competitive debuts to six new recruits — Kelvin Ihunwo, Osimaga Duke, Effimi Nsi, Emmanuel Nnaji, Seyi Oguntayo and Chidiebere Nnachi — as he sought to inject fresh energy into the squad.

The encounter was the third meeting between the two Oriental rivals, with both sides once again unable to establish bragging rights.

Abia Warriors improved considerably after the interval, particularly following the introduction of Innocent Godwin and Ikoi Ettah for Duke and Nnachi in the 73rd minute.

Their arrival gave the hosts greater attacking impetus, with the Warriors mounting sustained pressure as they searched for the breakthrough.

Chinedu Iwueze was introduced two minutes later for Emmanuel Nnaji, further strengthening the home side's attacking push, but the Warriors' wastefulness in front of goal continued to haunt them.

The closest they came to snatching all three points arrived in added time when Israel Joseph unleashed a curling effort that appeared destined for the net.

Kun Khalifat goalkeeper Akuchie Obinna, however, produced a superb save to keep out the effort and preserve his side's clean sheet.

Akuchie's commanding performance between the posts was instrumental in earning the visitors a valuable point, with the goalkeeper repeatedly frustrating the Warriors' attacking efforts.

The draw leaves Abia Warriors with plenty to work on, particularly their efficiency in the final third, as they turn their attention to their next assignment.

The Warriors will travel to Kaduna for their next NPFL fixture, where they will face Ranchers Bees in their backyard.
