Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia were held to a 1-1 draw by Plateau United of Jos in a lively Matchday 20 encounter that marked the start of the NPFL’s second half of the season. Chukwuemeka Obioma emerged as the hero for the Warriors, scoring the equalizer to secure a valuable point for the home side.
Despite aiming to achieve a fourth consecutive win for the first time in their history, the Warriors had to settle for a draw in front of their passionate supporters.
Head coach Imama Amapakabo made six changes to the starting lineup compared to the reverse fixture, including the notable inclusion of Emmanuel Ogbuagu, who returned to the starting XI after a period on the sidelines.
The visitors took an early lead in the eighth minute against the run of play, with Sakar Gafar converting from close range following Plateau United’s first corner of the game, silencing the home fans at Umuahia Township Stadium.
Abia Warriors responded with persistent pressure, which eventually paid off in the 28th minute. A short corner from Paul Samson to Imoh Obot was squared, and Obioma’s initial header was parried by Plateau goalkeeper Amah John, but the striker was quick to follow up and fire the rebound into the net to level the score.
The home side came close to taking the lead in stoppage time, with Paul Samson failing to connect with a perfect cross from Casmir Azubuike. Samson also had another chance in the 66th minute, but his effort narrowly missed, while Azubuike’s header soon after was comfortably caught by John.
Despite a series of substitutions from both teams, the match ended in a 1-1 stalemate, marking the fourth home draw of the season for Abia Warriors.
The Warriors will now travel to Kano to face Kano Pillars on Sunday, January 18, 2026, as they aim to regain momentum in the NPFL.
