Match Day 11 Review: Abia Warriors FC secures first away points of the season

Posted : 04 December 2023

The Head Coach of Abia Warriors FC, Erasmus Onuh, has expressed the team's commitment to evolving into one of the most formidable forces in the Premier League. Onuh's statement followed his team's acquisition of the initial away point for the season in a challenging clash against the less-favored Bayelsa United FC at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, boasting a capacity of 5,000.

Abia Warriors Football Club, hailing from Umuahia, clinched their first away point during the ongoing 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League season, engaging in a thrilling 2-2 draw against Bayelsa United in a Match Day 11 showdown. The second half witnessed two goals from each side, resulting in a shared victory.

Coach Erasmus Onuh made a solitary alteration to the squad that triumphed over Rangers International in the Match Day 10 fixture at Umuahia Township Stadium, with Daniel Ijeh stepping in for the injured Jerry Ogu in the left-back position.

Despite the home team's spirited efforts, fueled by the elation of their draw against Katsina United, it was the away side that initially found the net. Unfortunately, Ugwunna Chidera's headed effort was disallowed for offside. Nevertheless, Abia Warriors demonstrated commendable gameplay, dominating possession with Emmanuel Onu as the chief tormentor and Samson Obi pressuring United's defense.

The breakthrough came in the 76th minute when Obi capitalized on a flowing counter-attack involving Dehinde Ibrahim. The nimble striker orchestrated a dazzling run into the opponent's half, delivering a precise pass for Samson Obi to convert, marking his inaugural league goal of the season.

Ibrahim Dehinde joined the scoring spree three minutes later, seizing the opportunity as United's goalkeeper struggled to handle Emmanuel Onu's cross. Abia Warriors' number 27 jersey secured his third goal of the season.

Facing a potential third home defeat, Bayelsa United mounted a relentless offensive, leading to Robert Mizo, the league's top scorer, netting two quick goals in the 82nd and 87th minutes, leveling the score after a defensive mix-up by the Warriors.

In the dying moments of injury time, Ugwunna Chidera had a golden opportunity to secure all three points for Abia Warriors but squandered his chance with an errant shot, leaving the match concluding at 2-2 in Yenagoa. Abia Warriors will now shift their focus to prepare for their upcoming Match Day 12 encounter against Sporting Lagos in Umuahia.
