Abia Warriors and Enyimba International settled for a goalless draw in a fiercely contested Abia Derby at the Umuahia Township Stadium on Matchday 12 of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
The highly anticipated clash between the two Abia rivals lived up to expectations, offering fans a thrilling display of skill and determination, even though neither side managed to find the breakthrough goal.
Abia Warriors started brightly and could have taken an early lead in the sixth minute when Sunday Megwo set up Suraj Lawal in a promising position, but the forward’s backheel attempt went astray with Megwo and Fatai Abdullahi well positioned for a return pass. The hosts came close again in the 25th minute, but Enyimba goalkeeper Kelvin Ogunga produced a fine save to deny Megwo in a one-on-one situation.
Ogunga remained alert throughout the first half, pulling off another crucial stop from Paul Samson’s dangerous cross to prevent Megwo from tapping in. Enyimba, meanwhile, struggled to create clear chances as they were pinned back for much of the half by the Warriors’ attacking pressure.
After the break, the Warriors increased their tempo, dominating possession and forcing the visitors deep into their own half. Paul Samson spurned a golden chance in the 61st minute, blazing over the bar after being set up by the lively Suraj Lawal. Moments later, the hosts appealed for a penalty when Megwo appeared to be pushed inside the area, but the referee waved play on.
Abia Warriors continued to press late on, with Fatai Abdullahi testing Ogunga from distance and Suraj nearly creating a winner with a teasing delivery that eluded Megwo and substitute Chindi Merpring. Despite their dominance, the home side had to settle for a point as Enyimba held firm to preserve the draw.
Abia Warriors will look to bounce back when they travel to face Bayelsa United at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa on November 16.
